Meet the Team

Bart Johnson, PhD
Bart Johnson holds a BEE from the University of Minnesota and a PhD from MIT in electrical engineering. He has held engineering positions at MIT Lincoln Laboratory, AT&T Bell Laboratories, and McDonnell Douglas/Boeing. Since 2000 he has been employed as an electro-optics engineer at Boston-area startups CoreTek (tunable VCSELs), Azna (chirp managed lasers for telecom) and Axsun Technologies. His current position is Director of Electro-Optics Systems Engineering at Axsun involving laser-based NIR spectroscopy and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). In OCT, he contributes to electro-optical systems design and testing as well as theoretical modeling of swept laser sources.
Tim Ford, PhD
Tim Ford received a BS in Biomedical Engineering in 2008 from The University of Texas under Andrew Dunn and a PhD in Biomedical Engineering in 2013 from Boston University under Jerome Mertz. He served as a Postdoctoral Fellow and later Sr. Research and Design Engineer at the Wellman Center for Photomedicine under Gary Tearney starting in 2013, developing investigational clinical OCT imaging systems of the gastrointestinal and cardiovascular areas. He moved to Axsun Technologies in 2017 where he has held various systems engineering roles. Tim has experience with clinical OCT systems in ophthalmological, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and emerging clinical specialties. He has expertise across many aspects of integrated systems, including control PCB assemblies, embedded firmware, image formation and digital processing, noise analysis, phase stability, laser safety analysis, and automated verification and acceptance testing. He currently leads a team of design and test engineers developing control and accessory PCB assemblies and associated embedded firmware and control libraries for the OCT and NIR spectroscopy product lines.


Brian Goldberg, PhD
Brian has worked in optical coherence tomography (OCT) since 2003, beginning as a PhD student at MIT under the guidance of Gary Tearney and Brett Bouma. His doctoral research focused on novel swept-source designs and the fundamental noise properties of SS-OCT. With a strong foundation in physics, electrical engineering, and medical imaging technologies, Brian collaborates closely with customers to specify, design, and implement solutions that drive the next generation of imaging systems. As an OCT expert, he and his team tackle critical system integration challenges, ensuring customer success. Brian values the shared achievement of seeing customers thrive with products he helped bring to life.
Peter Whitney, PhD
Peter Whitney is the Chief Science Officer at Excelitas Technologies in Billerica and co-founder of Axsun Technologies, where he has been providing Engineering leadership since 1999. He brings deep expertise in semiconductor materials, wafer fabrication, MEMS and laser diode design and manufacturing, opto-electronic assembly and packaging, reliability analysis, and product qualification. Peter spearheaded the development of the core manufacturing technologies now central to Excelitas’ Billerica operations, and has played a leadership role in the New Product Development process and transfer of new products to production. Prior to founding Axsun, he worked at Lasertron as program manager and Engineering Director, where he provided technical and engineering leadership in the development of laser diodes for Telecommunications, culminating in the commercialization of the 980nm pump laser which revolutionized long distance communications in fiber optic networks. Peter earned his Ph.D. in Materials Science from MIT in 1986 and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and Physics from Princeton University in 1980.
